General Post-Op Instructions

Smiling woman sitting on sofa Procedure: Please reference the GENERAL POST-OPERATIVE INSTRUCTIONS form provided to you at your treatment conference and pre-surgery appointments for detailed information regarding the followings:

•  Do not chew foods directly on the surgical site(s). Chew on the non-operated side of the mouth.
•  Soft diet starting the day of the procedure and continues for 10-14 days.
•  Food must be soft (soft food is considered as anything that can be smashed with a fork/spoon). Avoid chewing on hard and sticky foods.
•  Use the recommended antimicrobial mouthrinse. Do not spit, gargle or swish the fluid because these actions can cause the blood clot to become dislodged, which would cause the surgical site(s) to bleed and/or interfere with the stability of the graft.
•  Do not use straws during the first 10-14 days after procedure as sucking on straw interferes with healing similar to spitting, gargling and swishing.
•  Rinse with warm salt water throughout the day in addition to the antimicrobial mouthrinse. This is particularly important after having meals or snacks.
•  On the first day, when return home from the procedure keep the area cold for first 24 hours to help with swelling (apply ice pack on outside of face-10 minutes on and then 10 minutes off for at least first hour). Starting from the second day, apply warm towel in the similar fashion. This will help with alleviate swelling and bruises.
•  Avoid stretching the lip(s) or cheek(s) on the same side as the surgical side.
•  Avoid brushing directly on the surgical site(s) for 10-14 days, but normal brushing/flossing other areas of the mouth. It’s best to stay 2 teeth away from the surgical site while performing brushing/flossing.
•  Avoid using water floss in the surgical area until further instruction from Dr. Trinh.
•  For some procedures or ONLY when instructed by the doctor, patients can gently brush the teeth/gums at the surgical sites with a soft surgical toothbrush.
•  Stay hydrated- drink plenty of water.
•  No strenuous exercise or heavy lifting for 24-48 hours post-op (can cause increase in bleeding).
•  Take all pre- and post-op medications until they are finished as instructed by Dr. Trinh and according to the prescription labels.
•  Do not pull or attempt to cut the sutures.
•  Do not place your tongue on the sutures or near the surgical site(s) as this can transmit bacteria to the surgical sites.
•  If bleeding occurs and does not stop, gently apply slightly moist gauze with constant pressure or apply a moist non-herbal tea bag for 45 minutes, and call the office or Dr. Trinh at 469-927-6287.

Please do not hesitate to contact our office at 623-556-5442 during and after office hours or call Dr. Trinh at 469-927-6287 if you have any questions or concerns. We are here to help you heal comfortably and achieve be the best treatment outcome.
