Dental Implant FAQ![]() Dental ImplantsThere are, in fact, three different components to every dental implant. Most people think of them as a single piece but they are, in fact, separate. Dental implants are, without question, an excellent artificial tooth option because they are a permanent fixture in the patient's mouth. The first section is known as the implant. This is the part embedded into the jawbone and provides an anchor for the other two pieces. The second component is called an abutment and connects into the implant, creating a solid foundation for the third and final section known as the crown. The crown is the only section of the implant which can be seen. These can be shaped and tinted so they appear like natural teeth in the patient's mouth, offering a natural look to their smile. Dental Implant ProceduresOne of the biggest drawbacks to the placement of dental implants is that it takes place over the course of a few appointments. The first appointment puts together the treatment plan and does a full assessment, detailing everything necessary to complete the implant placement. There may be more than one procedure to prepare the mouth for dental implants. This could entail tooth extraction, gum grafts, root canals, and bone grafts in order to complete. What Makes a Good Candidate?Unfortunately, dental implants aren't for everyone. Some patients are not considered good candidates and other solutions will need to be pursued. Candidates need to have a high level of supportive bone structure in order to provide the foundation for dental implants. Those who use tobacco on a regular basis or who abuse alcohol are also not good candidates. Dental Implant TypesThe endosteal implant is the type most people are familiar with. They are made of three components and embedded into the jawbone, topped with a crown. It can be used to support a single tooth or a complete set of teeth. When there is not enough bone structure, a subperiosteal implant will be used. It is a metal framework which rests on the jawbone. Once it fuses, this framework acts as the foundation for the implant.
