Non-Surgical Treatment![]() Patients who are exhibiting symptoms of periodontal disease, need to reach out to our Implant & Periodontics Solutions office immediately for an assessment. We are always available for appointments. The assessment takes less than 20 minutes and can be completed in a single office visit. What Causes Periodontal Disease? There are many people who do not think it is a bad thing to skip brushing or flossing a night here and there. This is not the case. Skipping brushing and flossing just one night can allow the bacteria that is normally helpful in breaking down food particles to grow into a dangerous and destructive mechanism attacking both the teeth and the soft tissues of the mouth. When these bacteria are left to their own devices, they not only become overgrown, but they also can turn into tartar and then plaque. The significance of this is that these two things aggravate the gum tissue and start the process of periodontal disease. Another problem is once tartar and plaque become present in the oral cavity, they cannot be removed by brushing and flossing alone. They need to be taken care of by a professional. If the bacteria is not removed with regularity, it can not only cause problems with regard to gum irritation, it can lead to bleeding following flossing and brushing and eventually become gingivitis, which is the first stage of gum disease. The importance of this is, gingivitis (or stage one of periodontal disease) is the only point in which the disease can be completely cured. Treatment Options for Periodontal DiseaseWhile there are both surgical and non-surgical treatments available for periodontal disease, an evaluation will need to be performed in order to determine what stage the disease is in before a treatment method can be recommended. In the earlier stages of the disease, the non-surgical options can combat the symptoms and turn back the progress of the disease. There are antibiotic courses that are used. Other non-surgical treatments are root planing and root scaling. Both of them are incorporated to keep bacteria from being able to cling to the tooth surface. It is understandable for patients to be uneasy about getting a periodontal disease diagnosis, but it is important they remain diligent about their oral health.
