What are Platelets?


Platelets are cells that circulate in your blood. These cells are responsible for tissue healing after an injury. When an injury occurs, platelets are attracted to the site. They collect there, forming a clot, which stops bleeding. Together, the platelets form a fibrin network that helps to stabilize the clot. It also provides a temporary support matrix while platelets release growth hormones that stimulate tissue healing and regeneration.

L-PRF


Leukocyte-platelet rich fibrin, or L-PRF, is a substance that is created from a sample of your blood. The goal of this treatment is to aid in wound healing and tissue regeneration. With this technique, we can concentrate and extract certain components and molecules from your blood and place them back over the surgical wound to help achieve this goal.

How is L-PRF Made?


Before we begin your procedure, we first take a small sample of your blood. This sample is then spun in a centrifuge. The centrifuge is located right in our office, so there is no need for additional appointments to have blood drawn before your procedure. The centrifuge spins at high speed, separating out the platelets from the red blood cells. As the blood spins, natural coagulation occurs, and a fibrin network forms in the center. Platelets get trapped in this layer, while red blood cells remain at the bottom.

After the sample is finished spinning, the fibrin clots with platelets trapped inside can be removed using forceps. The clots are then placed in a special box, and the remaining liquid is pressed out of them. The result is thin membranes that can then be placed over the surgical sites.

Uses for L-PRF


L-PRF has many uses in the dental world. These benefits include
