Bone Regeneration

A rendering of human head with jawbone highlighted The single most important aspect of oral health care is for the patient to diligently brush and floss their teeth multiple times a day. This not only keeps the teeth clean and gums healthy, but it also wards off the chances of decay settling in and deteriorating soft and hard tissues of the oral cavity. Damage to teeth and gums can also come by way of injury, as well as disease and neglect. When there has been a considerable bone loss as a result of any of these situations, one possible solution is regeneration, which simply means regrowth. Although it does require sedation, the procedure itself is rather straightforward and can be finished with just one office visit.

Our office strives to provide all of the answers necessary to provide our patients with excellent care. If you have questions, come in to see us at Implant & Periodontics Solutions so we can help.

Bone Loss Causes

When patients have pain from a chipped tooth or gums that are bleeding, the symptoms are very easy to determine. That is not the case with bone mass loss. Certainly, there can be some pain associated with it as teeth shift and biting surfaces change, but visually it is very difficult to ascertain whether jawbone deterioration has occurred or not.

For jawbones to remain healthy, they need oppositional forces to stay strong. Each time a patient bites down, the force of the opposing teeth coming together makes the jaw retain its strength. With tooth loss, this opposing force is lost. There is nothing for the tooth to push against except empty space. This then causes the jawbone to grow weaker, the bone tissue actually beginning to resorb into the body. That is why artificial teeth can be so important once a patient has suffered tooth loss.

If the jawbones have resorbed too much and there is an unsatisfactory amount of bone mass, surgical intervention is necessary. One such surgery is regeneration.

Why is Bone Regeneration Needed?

Widespread bone mass loss can cause specific problems by having teeth shift, jaw functionality impacted, and even tooth loss. With a bone graft, bone regeneration is possible. This will not only impact the existing symptoms but also provide a stronger foundation for restorative dental procedures.

While regeneration is preventative in nature, it does have an impact on the patient's appearance as well. Without the supportive structure behind the lips and cheeks, they will sag inward and drastically change the overall appearance of the patient. With regeneration, the jawbone can be strengthened to the point that it can adequately support other dental appliances. Regeneration is typically considered a starting point within the realm of a long line of restorative procedures.

When patients are considering artificial tooth solutions and are told they have inadequate bone structure to support them, they should consider regeneration. It can rebuild lost bone mass. Come to our Implant & Periodontics Solutions office today to find out more or call us at 623-556-5442.
