Implant Supported Dentures![]() These concerns are all valid but can be taken care of simply by using an overdenture. This denture is attached to dental implants, which are permanently secured into the jawbone of the patient. There is no adhesive to mess with either. If patients are interested in finding out more, please contact our Implant & Periodontics Solutions office. Our team is always more than willing to help our patients with their care. What are the Different Types of Implants? There are two different types of implants that are typically used to support dentures. In order to determine which type is best for the patient's circumstances, we would need to perform an assessment. This evaluation can be completed in under 15 minutes. The first type of implant is known as a bar-retained denture. This involves a slender bar of metal which links the denture to the implant with tiny clips. The second type of commonly used implant is known as a ball retained implant. A small socket is used instead of a thin piece of metal to keep the denture secure. Clips are used to attach the denture to the socket and keep them secure in the patient's mouth. What is Involved?Dental implants do take more than one appointment to properly place. While it is hard to remain patient for the final appointment, it is necessary to make sure they are correctly placed. With sedation dentistry, the patient is kept comfortable by using a local anesthetic. Once sufficient numbing has occurred, a small incision is made along the gumline to expose the jawbone. At that time, an implant will be embedded into the bone. Once it has healed and fused with the bone, then the abutment is placed. It, too, needs to heal before the final piece, the crown is placed. The Final PlacementWhile waiting for the proper amount of healing, the crowns are manufactured by computers to make them fit to their exact measurements so there are no rough edges and no reshaping needed. With the advent of computer technology in the dental arena, strides have been made in many aspects of care, dental implants included. For those patients dealing with widespread decay and significant tooth loss, one possible artificial tooth solution is implant-supported dentures.
