Supported Periodontal Therapy This is also known as periodontal maintenance procedure, which is performed at selected intervals (every 3 or 6 months based the severity of periodontal and implant diseases and the ability of patients to perform daily oral hygiene). Periodontal maintenance is performed by the periodontist and dental hygienist under supervision of the periodontist after patients complete either surgical or non-surgical periodontal therapy (scaling and root planning to clean the root of natural teeth, or debridement to clean the contaminated diseased implant surface). The goal of supported periodontal therapy is to 1) remove buildup (plaque and calculus) on the neck of natural teeth and dental implant, 2) help maintain the health of gum and bone that support natural teeth and dental implants, especially in patients with history of periodontal and implant disease, 3) prevent progression or relapsing of periodontal and implant diseases, 4) help patients establish proper daily oral hygiene techniques to remove food and calculus buildup in the mouth, and 5) to monitor the condition of the dental prosthesis that are either supported by natural teeth or dental implants. As you invest in your oral health, supported periodontal therapy is an inexpensive method of protecting your oral health investment. |
