Frenectomy

Child sticking out her tongue Frenectomy procedures have been around since the early sixties. Despite that, most patients have never heard of the procedure nor know what is involved. This surgery removes bothersome tissue which is located either directly under the tongue or just inside the upper lip. When the connective tissue is found stretching from the underside of the tongue to the floor of the mouth it is known as a lingual frenum. When this tissue is removed it is called a labial frenectomy. If the tissue is found stretching from just above the front teeth to the upper lip it is called a labial frenum. When it is surgically removed it is called a labial frenectomy.

In most cases, frenectomies are performed during childhood. It is a quick procedure, taking less than 15 minutes from start to finish. For those patients or parents who have concerns and think they might need a frenectomy, please come in to Implant & Periodontics Solutions so we can discuss the details.

What Causes Frenum?

Unlike so many medical conditions, there is nothing a patient can do to have problems with their frenum. It is all based on genetics whether the frenum is too short or has excess tissue associated with it. To see the frenum beneath the tongue, it is easy enough to do. Simply look in the mirror and reach your tongue toward the roof of your mouth. The thin line stretching along the underside of the tongue is the lingual frenum. The labial frenum is found behind the upper lip, stretching to just above the front teeth.

For infants who have a short lingual frenum, they can have a difficult time latching correctly while trying to breastfeed. It can also restrict the natural motion of the tongue leading to problems speaking. Without the unrestricted movement of the tongue, it is incredibly difficult to enunciate correctly. This is actually called being tongue-tied. In severe cases being tongue-tied can even make it difficult to swallow. Thankfully, with a simple frenectomy procedure, this can be corrected. Interestingly enough, boys have a much higher chance than girls do of being born with frenum issues.

Other Considerations

While most people can understand the above issues, they might not consider having problems with either the labial or the lingual frenum can cause challenges with proper brushing and flossing. If the frenum is not taken care of correctly, lack of oral health care can lead to gum disease and tooth decay.

Maxillary Frenectomy Procedure

The technical term for the surgery is known as a maxillary frenectomy. This procedure is easy to perform and takes less than a single 15 minute appointment. Patients who have this done notice improvement immediately. For any patient or parent of a child who is struggling with frenum issues, come see us Implant & Periodontics Solutions.
