What is Periodontal Disease?

Diagram illustrating the progression of periodontal disease from healthy gums to advanced periodontal disease, highlighting symptoms like gingivitis and bone loss. At the heart of periodontal disease is an affliction that is both incredibly progressive and destructive to all tissues in the oral cavity. It begins by allowing the bacteria, which is always present in the mouth, to get to dangerous levels. When the bacteria are at a normal level, they help to keep the mouth clean by digesting small bits of food debris left behind. Having a patient brush and floss regularly can prevent the disease. If patients fail to do this, then the bacteria levels will rise, which can not only start tooth decay but create an environment where gum disease can progress. While many patients might know the term "gum disease," they likely are unaware that once it progresses through to the later stages, it is not curable. For those patients who are suffering from periodontal disease symptoms and are in need of treatment, please come see us today at Implant & Periodontics Solutions.

Periodontal Disease Causes

Some patients might think periodontal disease is something similar to the flu or a cold, but it is not a virus. It is caused by the simple fact that the patient has failed to maintain a high level of oral health. There are other contributing factors which can make a patient more susceptible to the disease, but it still comes down to not brushing or flossing well enough to rid their mouth of the dangerous bacteria. These bacteria can become tartar and then plaque, which can result in the beginning stages of periodontal disease.

The factors which can make someone more likely to get the disease are those patients who are in puberty or are pregnant, or who are going through menopause. This is because all of these things coincide with altered levels of hormones which can increase the chances of incurring the disease. Also, those patients who regularly use tobacco products of any kind are more likely to develop gum disease. This includes e-cigarettes. It is important to stress that the earlier the disease is detected, the better. This is because the first stage is the only one in which the disease can be cured.

Symptoms of Periodontal Disease

For some, the symptoms are not always obvious. The first symptoms which occur during gingivitis, which is the earliest stage, can include sore gums that can bleed while flossing or brushing, also, soreness along the underside of the jaw. If patients notice blood after brushing, they should come to see us immediately for an assessment.

Gum Disease Prevention

The most effective way to prevent gum disease is the simplest, by regularly brushing and flossing, and attending scheduled professional cleanings twice a year. It is the best protection against the disease. Gum disease is serious and can lead to complications in the respiratory and circulatory systems in the body.
